Welcome to our beautiful city of San Francisco …

… admired throughout the world and home to a flourishing movement of peace,
culture and education known as SGI-USA, based on the Buddhism of Nichiren
Daishonin.

Daisaku Ikeda, the mentor of Soka Gakkai International, has visited San Francisco
many times, beginning in October, 1960. In response to his mentor Josei Toda’s
dream to “illuminate the world with the golden light of humanism,” he had embarked
on his first trip outside of Japan to encourage ordinary people to become
peacemakers in their daily lives.

On a visit to Telegraph Hill on October 5th, noticing the statue commemorating the
arrival in the “New World” of Christopher Columbus, President Ikeda said, “Like
Columbus, we have now taken our first step on American soil. But we are engaged in
a far nobler undertaking – for we are striving to create here on earth a new world
where indestructible happiness and eternal peace reign supreme. With the passage of
time – in twenty, fifty, or a hundred years from now – today will without a doubt be
remembered as a day of profound significance in the history of our movement.”

Nearly 50 years later, the SGI organizations have become the largest and most diverse
Buddhist movement in the world, with over 12 million members in 195 different
countries and regions, walking joyfully on the path of mentor and disciple.
